The Old Castle (Vieux Château), witness to the Hundred Years' War
It's impossible to visit Île d'Yeu without discovering this fortress! Built just before the Hundred Years' War in the 14th century on a rocky outcrop, the Old Castle dominates the ocean with incredible presence. This medieval fortress resisted English and Spanish assaults. Today, you can cross its drawbridge and explore the inner courtyard. The view from the ramparts over the wild coast is worth the detour.

The Grand Lighthouse (Grand Phare), sentinel of the Atlantic
Standing 41 metres high, the Grand Lighthouse has stood in the centre of Île d’Yeu since 1951. It replaces the former lighthouse destroyed in 1944, the original lighthouse having been built in 1830. This white tower dominates the landscape at 56 metres above sea level. Its light reaches up to 30 nautical miles! The ascent of 198 steps rewards you with an exceptional panorama. On a clear day, you can see Noirmoutier and even the mainland.

The village of Saint-Sauveur, the authentic heart of Île d’Yeu
This inland village is one of the oldest on Île d’Yeu and a place steeped in history. The Saint-Sauveur church is an absolute must-see. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1906, it is a testament to a thousand years of history.
It recently benefited from a restoration that revealed 12th-century frescoes as well as a collection of contemporary stained-glass windows. It is an enriching cultural stop. Remember to check mass times if you wish to visit it freely.
- Address: rue du Général Leclerc, 85350 L'Île-d'Yeu, France.
Beaches and Coasts: between relaxation and wild nature
Between long family beaches and wild coasts battered by the winds, Île d’Yeu reveals varied and authentic maritime landscapes.
Plage des Vieilles, a supervised gem
For swimming, Plage des Vieilles is one of the most popular beaches on Île d'Yeu. Access to this family-friendly cove is easy via a rural path. The bay is ideal for a moment of relaxation and swimming, especially if you are looking for a place sheltered from the wind.

Ker Châlon, ideal for families
Located near Port-Joinville, this beach welcomed the first sea baths in the 20th century. Its fine sand and calm waters are perfectly suited for family swimming. Holidays on Île d'Yeu often begin here! At low tide, you can go shellfishing.
Pointe des Corbeaux, transition between two worlds
At the southeastern tip of the island, this point marks the break between the wild coast and the dune beaches. The lighthouse rebuilt in 1950 overlooks this small sheltered beach. The fishermen's huts add character.
